Brian White

Brian White and Peter George both moved from apprentice technician to Lead Technician by passing the ASCS (Air System Cleaning Specialist) exam proctored by NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association). The test is not an easy one and demonstrates how thoroughly they have both learned the skills needed to properly clean HVAC systems in the homes and businesses of Safety King’s customers.

NADCA is the internationally recognized certifying body for the air duct cleaning industry and offers several certifications for those employed by member companies. The first and most critical certification for anyone working in air duct cleaning is the ASCS, which both Brian and Peter earned this past month. We are very proud to have each of them working here.

The Safety King Kid generated a lot of smiles per mile in his appearance in the Michigan Peach Festival Parade on Labor Day Monday in downtown Romeo. The parade, officially named the 2010 Peach Festival Floral Parade sponsored by Sheena’s Marketplace, began at at 1:30 PM on Monday, September 6, 2010 (Labor Day). The picture at right shows The Kid walking behind the Safety King pickup truck in the parade.

There are over 200 local Michigan providers of air duct cleaning and you’ve seen many of their ads offering a complete air duct cleaning for $49, $79, $99 or some other low price. Safety King charges between $449 and $599 for single-furnace homes with a basement. Why? Why so much more than these other providers?

The answer is this. We charge more because we do more.

Here’s what Safety King brings to every job:

• Best equipment (power vacuum trucks, onboard compressors, sanitized agitation tools)
• Best technicians (NADCA certified, uniformed, trained)
• Best procedures (DUCT-CAM , all ducts, blower and blower compartment, A-coil)
• Adequate time (average of two to three hours for each job)
• A real guarantee
• The right state licensing (licensed for duct cleaning & sanitizing, not carpet cleaning, etc.)
• Complete insurance, all risks, total coverage
• Specialization and focus (we do air duct cleaning ONLY)
• History and experience (since 1969, oldest and largest provider in the Midwest)

A small number of our competitors do have one or two of these good characteristics…But there’s not a single local competitor that has the whole package like we do.

We actually charge as little as we can and still do the job we do.

Choosing the lowest price provider carries certain very real risks.
They might:

• Reveal additional charges after they get to your home (bait and switch), and you end up paying more than you would have paid us.
• Bring portable or truck-mounted vacuum equipment to your home without enough power to do the job. If it’s small enough to carry into your house, it’s probably too small.

 Some portable vacuum equipment is simply too puny to do the job.

This technician may be well-intentioned but we think he is also vacuum-challenged.

“Truck Mounted” vacuum equipment often does not truly mean a giant Power Vacuum Truck. And the one in this picture is one of the BIGGER examples!

Our good friends at MITE-E-DUCTS in Zionsville, IN, took this picture of the portable equipment that one of their local low-cost providers takes to the homes of his customers.

There is risk also in what a low-cost provider might NOT do. He might not:

• Have the right training, tools and techniques. Even assuming adequate vacuum, the key to a thorough cleaning is the skillful use of sanitized agitation tools (brushes, whips, air snakes) on all surfaces inside your air ducts to knock loose adhered dust and debris.
• Pull the blower to clean it thoroughly.
• Open the plenum to air wash and vacuum the A-coil.
• Protect your driveway and your home from damage and soil during the job. Some don’t even carry technician booties and drop-cloths.

Below are two pictures we took in November of 2008. The owners of this home had hired a low-price provider to clean their air ducts. The technician created such a mess in the house that the homeowners hired us to come out and check over the job. We discovered that not only had the low-price guy blown dust needlessly all over the home, he had also failed almost completely to remove the dust and debris from inside the air ducts. They had us do a proper cleaning on their air ducts. We got every scrap of that debris out, and we did it without adding to the dust in their home.

The inept technician did not need to release all this dust in the house. He simply had inadequate equipment and poor technique.

To make matters worse, he did not even get the debris out of the ducts. Whatever this customer paid him was wasted money for no benefit.

In short, if you hire one of the low-priced providers (we privately refer to them as BLOW-N-GOs), you’d have to get pretty lucky to even get a so-so job done on your ducts. If you want them REALLY clean, you’d better hire us.
